HCIF created the Delaware Valley Medication Safety Award in 2002 to recognize teams throughout the region that were implementing creative solutions to advance medication safety. Over the past several years, many of the entries have reflected exemplary efforts to promote both patient safety and medication safety. HCIF therefore broadened the criteria and changed the name of the award in 2008 to include projects that demonstrate innovative and replicable patient safety projects.
Crozer-Keystone Health System was named the winner of the 2009 Delaware Valley Patient Safety Award for its entry “Making a Great Catch for Patient Safety” at the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council’s Annual Meeting on October 23, 2009 and was presented with a grant of $5,000 to further support its patient safety initiatives.
Second-place winner Hahnemann University Hospital lowered its 2009 nursing turnover rate to 4.93% through its program “A Positive Return on Investment: RN Residents Leading the Way”, a unique program designed to improve clinical competence, critical thinking, and professional practice behaviors.
Tying for third-place are Paoli Hospital, for “Use of 0.9% Sodium Chloride in Place of Heparin for Maintenance of Central Line and PICC Line Patency” and Phoenixville Hospital for “Reducing the Risk of Healthcare-Associated Aspiration Pneumonia”.
