The Rx and Toxic Waste Management Workgroup focused on developing best practices for collection and disposal of toxic pharmaceutical waste and reviewed information from experts in pharmaceutical waste management.

Workgroup member Thomas Jefferson University Hospital developed a pilot program with Stericycle, Inc., that involved a color-coding system. Staff was trained and monitored, and the workgroup deemed the program to be a best practice. An agreement was reached with Stericycle to offer discounted pharmaceutical waste management contracts to all member hospitals of the Green Hospital Pilot.
