The Green Purchasing Workgroup considered various environmental aspects of purchasing, including supply chain vendor strategies, reusable shipping totes, collective regional recycling, and environmental purchasing policies (EPP). Success was achieved with supply chain vendors to provide more environmentally preferred products and to label “green” qualities in product descriptions.

The workgroup agreed that the greatest success could be achieved by implementing institutional environmental purchasing policies. To facilitate that strategy, the workgroup adopted Abington Memorial Hospital’s Environmental Purchasing Policy as a commitment for their respective hospitals. They also modified a more comprehensive policy, adapted from Kaiser Permanente, as an optional strategy. Both policies were sent to purchasing directors in the Green Hospital Pilot as models for adoption or adaptation.
