The Green Hospital Pilot Project is a major collaborative commitment of the area's hospitals to reduce waste stream volume, encourage energy and building efficiency, and enhance healthy environmental practices. The program is funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection under the Environmental Protection Agency's Challenging Hospitals to Build Healthy Environments program. The pilot was originally conceived in 2007 to include eight hospitals but, due to the overwhelming response, 20 hospitals joined the program. The pilot continues through June 2009.

Southeastern Pennsylvania hospitals participating in the Green Hospital Pilot Project include:

Abington Memorial Hospital
Albert Einstein Medical Center
Central Montgomery Medical Center
Chestnut Hill Hospital
Doylestown Hospital
Eastern Regional Medical Center
Fox Chase Cancer Center
Holy Redeemer Health System
Main Line Health System
Mercy Suburban Hospital
Methodist Hospital – TJUH
Nazareth Hospital
Penn Presbyterian Medical Center

The 20 pilot hospitals completed an assessment of environmental practices in order to establish a baseline for ongoing progress of the pilot. Click here for initial assessment results.

In order to develop common approaches and improve practices, four active workgroups were formed and meet on a quarterly basis:
