Four hospitals that achieved outstanding patient safety improvements were recognized at the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council’s Annual Meeting on October 23. The 2009 Patient Safety Award winner is Crozer-Keystone Health System for its submission “Making a Great Catch for Patient Safety”, developed to provide staff with a mechanism to report Near Miss Events (NME) that address vulnerabilities in the care process. Second-place winner Hahnemann University Hospital lowered its 2009 nursing turnover rate to 4.93% (from a 28% turnover rate in 2007) through its program “A Positive Return on Investment: RN Residents Leading the Way”. This unique RN Residency Program is designed to improve clinical competence, enhance critical thinking, and mature professional practice behaviors.
Tying for third-place are Paoli Hospital for its program “Use of 0.9% Sodium Chloride in Place of Heparin for Maintenance of Central Line and PICC Line Patency” and Phoenixville Hospital for its program “Reducing the Risk of Healthcare-Associated Aspiration Pneumonia”.
